The Child at Play: Theatre and Creative Expression in Children

The Child at Play: Theatre and Creative Expression in Children

by
Tom Langdon
Production Director, Sol Children Theatre Troupe

Within every child is an invaluable gift that holds extraordinary powers. It is a power which can transform that (in the adult world) from the mundane or inconsequential, into moments of pure magic and splendor. That power is the child’s imagination. Virtually every person has within them the ability to imagine and create. It is part of human nature. Nowhere is it more expansive than in the mind of a child . As we mature and adapt ourselves into the rules and restrictions of society, our freedom to create and express ourselves freely through play becomes diminished. Unfortunately, we are also living in a world where technology, changes in the home structure, dangers in the community and continued budget cutting of the creative arts in the school systems curtails that freedom at an earlier age. Where does the child go where that creative expression is not only nurtured, but also encouraged and allowed to manifest? Where it has always been: the theater.

Studies conducted throughout the world have proved that children who are not only taken to live theater performances at an early age, but given the opportunity to participate in theater programs become far more productive and attentive students and, consequently, greater contributors to their communities and society as adults. The theater is not only for the child who already shows the ability to perform. Perhaps the greatest ability of theater is that it can transform the shy, troubled or alienated child into one who is in total command of themselves and their untapped abilities. Some of our most successful actors, politicians and business professionals were these “problem children” who were given the opportunity to participate in theater and the arts as children. The theater is the world of magic, illusion, creative expression and unlimited possibilities. It is - at it’s core - play. It is, however, structured play. Too much freedom can lead to chaos. Too little leads to further frustration in the child. Finding the right theatrical company where a seasoned, experienced professional can not only encourage and nurture the child’s creativity, but also monitors and assists the child in their discovery is extremely important.

The parent must also keep in mind that the eventual outcome of this experience may not necessarily lead to fame. Parents often make the mistake of assuming that the child will go on to become a successful performer winning awards. Although that does happen, it is the child who must make the choice to continue to perform. What the theater provides and encourages is the opportunity for the child to begin to think, create and make choices on their own. To interact with other children as well as adults. To learn how to listen. To take a creative idea and manifest it into reality. To begin to understand and comprehend their own emotions, as well as those of others. The most important outcome of children who participate in theater is a well-rounded, creative and more productive adult citizen.

The gift of bringing your child to live theater and allowing them to participate in its wonders is perhaps the greatest gift any parent can give to their child, as well as to themselves.
